One of the drawbacks of the place theory is that it fails to adequately explain the pitch perception of low-frequency sounds.
Place theory is a theory of hearing that suggests that different portions of components along with the basilar membrane of the Cochlea are sensitive to sounds of different frequencies, as different parts of the cochlea are responded to by different frequencies. It is used to explain the hearing power of human beings and how it perceives high-pitched sounds, those which are above 1,000 hertz. For instance, chirping birds have approximately 10,000 hertz.
This theory is first given by the German physiologist Hermann Helmholtz in 1865. The base of the basilar membrane works best in high frequencies. In explaining the pitch perception of low-frequency sounds and in the absence of spectral peaks at the position, place theory failed.
