King Louis XIV signed the Code Noir (Black Code), a series of laws that governed the practise of slavery in the French colonies.

It happened when many European countries in North America were outlining the legal standing of enslaved Black people. The Code Noir was created to solve the issue of slavery especially on the sugar plantations of the French Caribbean, but the laws were later modified and implemented across the entire French Empire.

Slaves had to be provided with food, clothing, and medical attention as needed. It asserted that slaves lacked legal ability and forbade them from possessing property. It also set the rules for their unions, funerals, penalties, and the requirements they had to fulfil in order to be set free.
