Peter Seeger was an American folk singer and social activist. In 1936, when he was 17, Pete Seeger joined the Young Communist League (YCL). In 1942, he became a member of the Communist Party USA (CPUSA) itself but left in 1949.

He became one of the folk singers responsible for makinf the spiritual "We Shall Overcome" popular (also recorded by Joan Baez and many other singer-activists) that was embraced as the acknowledged anthem of the Civil Rights Movement.
