Number of atomic orbitals around central metal atom = Number of bond pairs + Number of lone pairs

If Number of atomic orbitals around central metal atom are 4 , the hybridization is [tex]sp^3[/tex] and electron domain geometry is tetrahedral.

But if there are two atoms around the central carbon, the third and fourth position will be occupied by lone pair of electrons. The repulsion between lone and bond pair of electrons is more and hence the molecular geometry will be bent.
