President Kennedy endeavored to topple Castro in April 1961. 1,400  Cuban agitators and outcasts, with the help of the CIA, propelled an  attack of Cuba at the Bay of Pigs. The assault was a calamity and  flopped inauspiciously, the radicals were met by 20,000 Cuban troops. Castro  killed or caught about every one of them inside days. The disaster persuaded Castro that the USA was foe; and he swung to the  USSR for protection.
