The archipelago is Culturally important for the region and the country because of its Buddhist tradition, stories dated from 2000 AD say that the Buddhist temples of the region where created to held the Goddes of mercy statue that "didn't want to leave China" and for this reason these temples became very important for Buddhist. The archipelago also suffered the damages of the many wars throughout the years, it was occupied and destroyed by their enemies, like the Dutch looting the region in 1661 and the British occupation in 1839 in the Opium war, the archipelago was rebuilt after the Buddhist grew again in power.
Nowadays the beautiful scenery of the archipelago and the massive temples makes it an attractive tourist attraction for both Buddhists and people just enjoying the landscape.
