Meiosis, which decreases chromosome counts from diploid to haploid, and conjugation (fertilisation), which restores the diploid state by joining two haploid cells, are the two opposing processes that make up this. Chromosome segregation and recombination are the two processes that meiosis uses to create variety. As in mitosis, sister chromatids (the two halves of a duplicated chromosome) still need to be separated. The homologous chromosomes, which an organism acquires from both of its parents and are similar but not identical, must also be separated.
