The issue which created a major conflict between state and federal government which was eventually resolved by a power and assertive federal response was when the Civil Rights Act of 1950s and 1960s challenged states’ rights to enforce Jim Crow laws. The federal government had to send military troops to enforce the Acts.
The Civil Rights Movement was a movement for social justice in the 1950s and 1960s for Black Americans to gain equal rights under the US law. The Civil Rights Act ended the segregation between Black Americans and others in public places and banned employment discrimination based on color, race, religion, sex, or national origin. On the other hand, Jim Crow laws was a set of state and local status that legalized racial segregation. The laws were intended to marginalize African American by denying vote rights, job and education opportunities, and other chances. The defying of the law resulted in fines, arrest, violence, and even death. When the states’ rights to enforce Jim Crow laws was challenged by the Civil Rights Act, it resulted in a major conflict which was eventually resolved by sending the military troops to enforce the Acts.
