yes, white collar crimes although non-violent break laws such as fraud and embezzlement. if left unpunished, that person could potentially steal millions of more dollars from innocent, unsuspecting people.

However, personally, I don't think the matter is that black and white. I think that the answer would depend on the severity of the crime and the criminals background. However, I also believe that prison overpopulation is a big issue. Many nonviolent criminals are sent to prison to serve sentences that are too lengthy for the crime committed. Other forms of punishment should be looked at, such as community service or a fine. Again, it should fit the crime. But if I were to give a simple answer, it would be that no, I do not believe nonviolent criminals should be incarcerated because they pose no threat to other people and can easily atone for their actions in alternative forms.
