Goal of the policy: To keep communism from expanding, and to allow countries to choose their own governments, preferably capatalism
Berlin Airlift: It was an act by the USAF? and the US government to send supplies via air to West Berliners
BACKGROUND: Germany was split into 4 sectors, USSR had control over the East, and the West was split in between the US, UK, and France. The City of Berlin also was split, even though it was located inside the USSR territory.
The USSR decided to impose an 'blockade' for they thought that their Democratic allies would give up on Germany and allow them to have complete control over Germany. However, the US didnt give up, and they allowed the "Berlin Airlift" to go forth, which, with the help of airplanes, dropped off supplies, such as "food, water (liquid), medicine, temporary shelter, etc".
After that the USSR decided that it could not hold the blockade any longer, because they knew they couldnt hold on any longer, and they lifted the blockade.
The policy of containment: IF the US and its democratic allies did not start the 'Berlin Airlift', the USSR had a high chance of being able to take over all of Germany, for soon the Allies would start to lose control of the capital, which in turn may cause people under their control to wonder if the Allies would help them. This unrest may lead to people wanting to not be ruled by the Democratic nations
