American colonists gathered around British soldiers and taunted them because the British soldiers were sent to the colonies to enforce taxation policies. The taunting started to create rowdiness and eventually escalated into throwing objects at the British soldiers, which led to the discharge of a rifle and other soldiers shooting into the crowd. If I'm not mistaken, this was known as the Boston Massacre.
