Better transportation allowed for people to move out west. As population grew in the west, they were allowed to be admitted as states in the union.
After the Louisiana Purchase, the US Territory stretched from the Mississippi to the Rocky Mountains. Transportation was very hard during that time and the Westward expansion through the built of railroads helped settlers to establish new towns and developed new territories and made travel easier. With time, those territories applied for statehood to the US. For example, Colorado joined the Union in 1876, North Dakota joined in 1889 followed by South Dakota, Montana, and Washington.
