Ma and Jack's relationship changes dramatically when they exit the Room. Ma's life in the room centered around Jack; she spent every waking hour with him, feeding him, schooling him, and playing with him. Every breath she takes is for Jack, and she just wants the best for him.

  • She wants him to have a taste of life outside of Room since she knows it has so much more to give Jack. She makes enormous sacrifices for Jack. At the age of five, she is still nursing him, which is eroding Ma's health, but she knows Jack requires the nutrients and food.
  • She frequently finds herself feeding Jack small quantities of food so he doesn't go hungry. Similarly, Jack is completely reliant on his mother, whom he adores. This is demonstrated when Ma plans the great escape, but Jack is hesitant because he fears the plan's success. Jack feared Old Nick's anger if he was apprehended during the escape.

Thus this is the relationship of Jack and Ma.
