Do seatbelts save lives?
CLAIM
Seatbelts do save lives. They have saved many lives as well as mang people from getting seriously injured in car crashes. Without seatbelts, lots of people wouldn't be here today.
EVIDENCE (3 pieces of evidence needed)
Newton's first law says that an object will stay at rest unless an unbalanced force acts on it. It also states that an object in motion will stay in motion with the same speed and direction unless it's affected by an unbalanced force. The article says that Newton's first law, inertia, is mostly experienced when your in a car or another vehicle. When wearing a seatbelt, you're strapped tightly to whatever vehicle your in. Both you and the vehicle share the same state of motion. When it speeds up, you speed up. When it slows down, you slow down. Seatbelts are basically what keep you and the vehicle in the same state of motion. Without them, you don't have that same state of motion. This can have many consequences.
REASONING
The article says "the tendency of moving objects to continue in motion is a common cause of a variety of transportation injuries - of both small and large degrees." Once again, seatbelts are the one thing keeping passengers and the vehicle in the same state of motion. If you weren't wearing them and got in a car crash, it would definitely cause serious injuries and maybe even death. Seatbelts also prevent both the drivers and passengers from getting thrown out of the car during a crash. Anyone not wearing their seatbelt during an accident is 30 times more likely to get thrown out of the car during a crash. People who do wear their seatbelts, though, are reducing the risk of death by 45%, and the risk of serious injury by 50%. This proves that seatbelts do save lives, and they will continue to do so.
