Native American Chief Joseph was born in the Wallowa Valley of Oregon Territory in the year 1840. He served as the chief of the Nez Perce Tribe's Wallowa band. As the Nez Perce leader in 1877, he rose to fame.

Chief Joseph of the Nez Perce presented the speech on October 5, 1877, when the Nez Perce were made to submit to Colonel Nelson Miles and General Grant. The phrase "I Will Fight No More Forever" was used to describe the speech.

The lower Snake River served as the geographic centre of the Nez Perce's ancestral homeland in North America. They belonged to the Plateau's indigenous population.
