John of Damascus is most heavily associated with defending icons as valuable devotional tools.

John of Damascus, also known as John Damascene, was a Christian monk, priest, hymn writer, and apologist. Born and raised in Damascus around 675 or 676; the exact date and location of his passing are unknown, but tradition places it on 4 December 749 in his monastery, Mar Saba, close to Jerusalem.

He was known as Chrysorrhoas (o, meaning "flowing with gold," or "the golden speaker") and was a polymath who contributed to the disciplines of law, theology, philosophy, and music.
