Interpersonal, institutional, and internalized oppression are all interconnected, and they all feed off of and reinforce one another. In other words, all three levels of oppression cooperate to keep society in an oppressive state.
Other types of oppression include anti-Semitism, sexism, heterosexism, ableism, classism, and ageism. Government, education, and cultural institutions all support or contribute to the oppression of socially underprivileged groups while elevating socially dominant ones.
We must admit the harm we have caused and resolve to heal from internalized messages of hopelessness, helplessness, or powerlessness if we are to break the cycle of oppression. We no longer have to give up, wait, or resentfully struggle alone.
