Tissues are groups of cells and the surrounding materials that work together to perform a particular function.

What are tissues?

  • A collection of cells with a comparable structure and function as a whole is referred to as a tissue.
  • The areas between the cells are filled with a nonliving substance known as the intercellular matrix.
  • There may be a lot of this in some tissues and not much in others.
  • A particular tissue may have special components in its intercellular matrix, such as fibres and salts, which are specific to that tissue and give it distinct properties.
  • The body is made up of four different types of tissue: epithelial, connective, muscular, and nerve.
  • Histology, or histopathology when referring to a disease, is the study of tissues.
