A return of the membrane potential towards the resting membrane potential immediately following depolarization is called repolarization.
When potassium ion starts to leave the cell, which takes a positive charge along with it, the membrane potential thus formed begins to move back toward the region of its resting voltage. This is termed repolarization which means that the membrane voltage will move back towards the −70 mV value voltage of the resting membrane potential.
Repolarization is caused when the closing of sodium ion channels takes place and when there will be the opening of potassium ion channels. Hyperpolarization is a stage that occurs due to the condition of excess open potassium channels and a potassium efflux evolved from the cell.
The return of the membrane potential which occurs to the resting potential is termed the repolarization phase occurs after depolarization. There also exists a phase of action potential during the time of which membrane potential could be more negative than the particular resting potential.
