The numbers we obtain when solving equations that aren't actually solutions to the equation are referred to as extraneous solutions.
Extraneous Solutions appear because there are two solutions when a square root problem is squared on both sides (the positive and negative numbers).
One of those numbers will therefore be an extraneous solution or a solution that is added but does not completely solve the original equation.
We just enter the solution into the original equation to determine whether it is superfluous.
If it makes a statement that is true, it is not an extraneous solution; however, if it makes a statement that is false, then it is.
