American sociologist, socialist, historian, and Pan-Africanist civil rights campaigner W.E.B. Du Bois. lived from February 23, 1868, until August 27, 1963. Du Bois was the first African American to receive a doctorate from Harvard University. After finishing his graduate work there, W.E.B. Du Bois went on to become a professor of history, sociology, and economics at Atlanta University. W.E.B. Du Bois was raised in a society that was mostly accepting and integrated. In 1909, W.E.B. Du Bois helped form the NAACP, which stands for the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. As the founder of the Niagara Movement, an organisation of African-American activists fighting for equal rights for all people, W.E.B. Du Bois attained widespread notoriety.
