Abraham Lincoln believed that the United States should be kept together to show that people can be free in the United States and not divide themselves as a result. He believed that as president, he was the father of the nation and needed to keep the United States together.
To keep the nation together, he supported a peaceful transition of the Southern regions back into the Union so that they would not feel aggrieved. This, to him, would make them ore likely to freely come back into the Union and stay there.
Sadly, he was never able to carry out his wish because he was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth, five days before the American Civil War ended.
