Plate boundaries can move as fast as 1 cm to over 10 cm per year and the scientists figure out how fast they go and which directions do they go through the use of GPS.
What is GPS?
This is referred to as Global positioning system and it contains different types of satellites which makes it easier to determine the ground position of different types of objects such as plate boundaries, rocks etc.
This system sends highly accurate navigation pulses to users thereby ensuring that the exact position is gotten and in the case of the plate tectonics people use it to determine the extent of movement within a given period of time.
