The action of striping James Watson of his honors for his views regarding race is a welcome development.
Dr. James Watson was the scientist that discovered DNA. He worked for so many years at the New York laboratory. He won the Noble price in 1962 in conjunction with Francis Crick and Maurice Wilkins as they worked on the discovery of the molecular structure of DNA.
However, in 2007, Dr. Watson made an unguarded comment in which he said that the blacks do not have the same level of intelligence as the whites and that the statements of racial equality does not corroborate with data available.
This statement cost him his position at the New York Laboratory and consequently stripping him of his honorary titles.
This action of stripping him of is honorary titles is correct because his statements are capable of instigating bias against minority groups which even though the statements are not proven empirically.
A person of his standing ought to only make statements that can be corroborated by sound scientific data and not voice personal sentiments.
