Billy Weaver, a 17-year-old who has taken a solo afternoon train from London to Bath, is introduced as the story's protagonist. It's late and rather cold outside when he gets to Bath.
Weaver asks the porter, who is responsible for carrying luggage, where he might be able to find a motel. The porter advises Weaver to visit The Bell and Dragon bar.
The author goes on to describe Billy's youth and the fact that this is his first time visiting Bath. He has no local contacts. But he's a rather ambitious young man, and he admires the "big guns up at Head Office" for being so efficient in everything they do.
Weaver comes across a charming bed and breakfast, which offers lodging and meals normally housed in someone's home, before he can find the bar that was suggested to him.
He observes the lovely drapes, the blazing fire, and the dozing dog through the window. According to the author, Weaver considers all of these factors to be evidence that the bed and breakfast is an excellent location to stay. Weaver muses on this, though, and concludes that perhaps he might just check out the pub. Weaver chooses to ring the bell despite his reservations since he can't shake the thought of the bed and breakfast.
The woman of the house opens the door very quickly and is described as being between 45 and 50 years old with a "warm welcoming grin", a "round pink face" and "extremely gentle blue eyes".
