South Africa under the British and then the Afrikaners was known for its agriculture. One of the provinces there called Natal, had fertile land which was great for sugar farming.

Many Indians went to Natal to get work on the Sugar Plantations there are indentured servants which meant they were to be treated fairly and eventually gain freedom.

The owners of the plantation there however did not keep to the terms of the indentured contracts they often signed and would abuse their workers heavily. They would also refuse them freedom and would arrest them if they left.
