Independent events is when a success or failure in an event do not influence the probability of a success or failure in the other event.

For item a, in each roll of the dice, the probability of the number being even/odd will not change from previous trials, hence the events are independent.

For item b, the slip will be kept out of a hat, hence the number of total outcomes change, hence changing the probability(desired outcomes divided by total outcomes), and hence the events are dependent.
