Determine what the author is saying about the subject in step two. Asking yourself "What does the author want me to know about the topic?" will help you determine what the author is saying about it. Again, this is usually five to seven words long and is not need to be a whole phrase.
Determine the major point that has been stated. To determine the stated major idea, combine your responses from Steps 1 and 2 and then look for a phrase or sentence in the opening section of the reading that most closely resembles your answers. This needs to be a full sentence and might even resemble a thesis statement.
