Marriage today has a huge difference as compared to the system followed by Hebrews and Mesopotamians.
Marriage in ancient Mesopotamia was of huge importance as it ensured the continuation of the family line and provided social stability. Among the Mesopotamians, arranged marriages were the norm where the couple have not met beforehand. According to Herodotus, Mesopotamians also practiced bridal auctions.
Hebrews on the other hand viewed as a contractual bond commanded by God in which a man and a woman come together to create a relationship, with the direct involvement of god. The main purpose of marriage was also to fulfill the command of god and have children.
Marriages today have a huge difference as a lot of importance is assigned to personal choice and individuality. Arranged marriages are no longer a norm and take place without children being the only purpose or not being the purpose at all.
