Robert K. Merton's Anomie Theory contends that pressure on those who lack to achieve culturally defined goals leads them to pursue deviant routes to success.

The fundamental idea of Robert K. Merton's Anomie Theory is that the majority of individuals work for culturally accepted objectives. When access to these objectives is denied to entire populations or to specific individuals this leads to a state of  anomie.

Deviant behavior emerges as a result, and it is characterized by resistance, withdrawal, ritualism, inventiveness, and/or conformance. Most crimes are the product of creativity.
