The grain stain staphylococcus epidermidis have a thick peptidoglycan layer and stain blue to purple. Gram negative cells have a thin peptidoglycan layer and stain red to pink.

Bacteria was colored purple , it have gram positive infection.If bacteria was colored pink then it means it have gram negative infection. Staphylococcus epidermidis is a very hardy microorganism, consisting of non-motile, gram positive cocci which arranged in grape like clusters.

Gram negative bacteria have cells with thin layers of peptidoglycan with 10 % of cell wall and lipid with fatty acids content.This can causes them to appear red to pink under a gram stain.
