The author’s use of free verse allow him to effectively express his feelings about the memorial in the poem ""facing it"" as he describes an Surrealist imagery.
Because in his book "Facing It," author Yusef Komunyakaa describes the painful experience of a Vietnam War veteran visiting the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. Komunyakaa served in Vietnam from 1965 to 1967; when he visits the memorial, the memories of those years haunt him and make him question his identity as a black Vietnam War veteran and the type of survivor he has become.
Free verse poetry, like "Facing It," doesn't follow any set rules for meter or rhyme and instead depends on the rhythms of prose to move the poem forwards. "Facing It" is a list of "I do this" and "I do that" sentences that require the listener to see the same things as the speaker. The poem is successful because the poet was able to make his visuals convey the intensity of his feelings. Instead of being informed what the speaker feels, we are shown.
When we consider that painting and photography are two of Komunyakaa's other loves, it makes obvious why he gives his images such strong resonance. Komunyakaa frequently employs metaphorical language that has been compared to surrealism. By capturing the logic of dreams, surrealist art aims to convey an otherworldly state of mind.
As the past and present merge into a new reality, a surreal reality, the speaker's experience of the hallucinatory world of battle is recreated in his encounter at the memorial.
