Who was Gilgamesh?
- Gilgamesh was a figure of honor in prehistoric Mesopotamian mythology and the main character of the epic poem The Epic of Gilgamesh, which was composed in Akkadian in the latter part of the 2nd millennium BC.
- He may have been a posthumously elevated historical ruler of the Sumerian city-state of Uruk.
- Though he rose to prominence in Sumerian legend during the Third Dynasty of Ur, his dominion most likely began around the start of the Early Dynastic Period (Mesopotamia), between 2900 and 2350 BC. Five extant Sumerian poems tell the stories of Gilgamesh's famous deeds.
- Gilgamesh helps the goddess Inanna and chases away the animals infesting her huluppu tree in "Gilgamesh, Enkidu, and the Netherworld," which is perhaps the earliest of these. She gives him a mikku and a pikku, both of which he misplaces.
- Gilgamesh is informed by Enkidu's shade about the depressing circumstances in the Underworld after Enkidu dies.
