A light beam is directed at a barrier with two vertical slits in the double-slit experiment. The resulting pattern is recorded on a photographic plate after the light passes through the slits. When one slit is covered, a single line of light appears, aligned with the open slit.

Essentially, the concept states that elementary particles can not only be in more than one place at the same time (via superposition), but that an individual particle, such as a photon (light particle), can cross multiple spaces at the same time.
