A Real-Life Indiana Jones: Hiram Bingham On July 24, 1911, a history lecturer from Yale University called Hiram Bingham III scaled a mountain ridge in Peru and came across one of the most incredible collections of ruins on earth: Machu Picchu. Since then, it has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

It was never discovered by the Spanish conquistadors, and the Incas, who knew where it was, kept their knowledge to themselves and were forgotten.
