The question ""what if everyone did that?"" does not provide an acceptable ethical standard because an ethical system does not solve all problems rationally always.
If we keep on thinking about what might everyone have done in that particular situation, we are not listening to the voice of our intuition and thus may end up even coming up with the wrong decision.
