According to research, some young adolescents have difficulty in their transition to middle school. One potential reason for this may be identity crisis.

The transfer to a new school may be related to physical changes and sexual experimentation.

Erik Erikson, a psychologist, said in the 1960s that adults experience a serious identity crisis known as "Identity vs. Identity Diffusion," which he classified as one of the stages of psycho-social development. Failure to resolve the issue results in role uncertainty and a weakened sense of self; success results in a secure identity.

In the phase of psychological development, an identity crisis emerges in adolescence when people battle with emotions of identity conflict and role uncertainty. Identity crises may be more prevalent today than they were in Erikson's day because of how quickly the world is changing.
