Marx saw the nation-state as a tool of oppression and religion as a way to distract and subdue the populace.
Nation-state:
- A nation-state would be a sovereign area with a single ethnic population that has a shared past. A true nation-state in the sense of the academic world does not exist today. There are several different national groups in almost every state (country) in the world.
- Despite the fact that the phrases nation state, and country are sometimes used interchangeably, there is a distinction between them. Both the phrases "country" and "state" refer to sovereign political entities. However, a nation is a group of people who are culturally similar but do not have sovereign power.
- Political philosophy historians generally agree that the "first nation state" as we currently define it was founded in revolutionary France because it was the first state to overtly assert legitimacy based on the nation.
