- Lysander The Spartan fleet immediately went to the Dardanelles, where Athens' grain came from, seizing the chance. The Athenian fleet was forced to follow since it was in danger of starving to death. At the Battle of Aegospotami in 405 BC, Lysander completely routed the Athenian fleet by employing a smart tactic and destroying 168 ships.
