Electrochemical strain microscopy (ESM) and conductive atomic force microscopy (C-AFM) are used to create and examine polymer composite electrolytes of Nafion and phosphotungstic acid (PWA) in order to see the hydrophilic ion channels near the surface, which are made up of water and sulfonic acid groups.
The findings show that the fibrillar objects in the ESM image are hydrophilic ion channels and additional ion channels created by interaction between PWA and sulfonic groups in Nafion, without major topographic alterations. Through the combined use of ESM and C-AFM, the buried ion channels beneath the surface as well as the intake and exit of the channels on the surface are investigated in this study. The findings improve our knowledge of ionic conduction in composite polymer electrolytes in a variety of fields.
