Modern air brake system combine three different systems and they are service brake, emergency brake and parking brake.

Air brakes system are commonly found in heavy commercial vehicles and trucks and are very powerful. They require more braking force than the driver's foot alone can provide. Instead of just foot pressure acting against flexible diaphragms in the brake chamber, you use compressed air pressure to operate Air brakes. These diaphragms are linked to the brake rods, which are linked to the brake-operating cams or "S" cams on the wheels. This brake system is also known as Power Brakes by some manufacturers.

Air brake systems are far more powerful than traditional mechanical or hydraulic brakes. As a result, they are widely used by manufacturers in heavy vehicles. The brake linkage is primarily made up of a pipeline. Aside from braking, compressed air from the reservoir can be used to inflate tires, operate windscreen wipers, horns, and a variety of other accessories.
