Modern Homo Sapiens are the mystery specimen of gracile australopith. A group of extinct hominids that were related to humans is known as the gracile australopithecines. They are members of the genus Australopithecus.

From 4 to 1.2 million years ago, gracile australopithecines, which were prevalent in Eastern and Southern Africa, shared many characteristics with contemporary humans and apes. The Laetoli site in Tanzania has the earliest evidence of genuinely bipedal hominids. These 3.7 million-year-old hominid footprints are strikingly comparable to those of contemporary people. Due to their more gracile masticatory equipment compared to the robust paranthropines, Au. anamensis, afarensis, africanus, and sediba (depending on the evolutionary scheme of particular paleoanthropologists) are referred to as gracile australopiths.
