This classic study was done by Ellen Langer and Judith Rodin in early 1980s.

This was performed to examine the role of personal control over their environment on elderly nursing home residents.

In the early stage of this study, residents were divided into two groups at random, with one group receiving greater opportunity for personal responsibility than usual.

After 18 months of this study, it was seen that people who were given control and personal responsibility had better health than those for whom control remained the same; these residents also had more deaths.

So basically the result of this study was that:

Elderly nursing home residents with a sense of control over their environment are healthier than elderly nursing home residents without a sense of personal control over their environment.
