Characterization is the soul of a plot or a story, next after the story itself. This is because well-thought-out characters help to drive the plot and give meaning to the theme.

There are numerous stories with poorly depicted characters. Some of them are:

  • Dreamer
  • Pathways
  • Eleanor and the Iron King
  • Silver in the Blood etc.

Can you think of a story or novel that had excellent characterization?

Romeo and Juliet and Hamlet by Williams Shakespeare are very good examples of stories or plays with excellent characterization.

What made it so excellent?

They are excellent examples because their characters are realistic, and driven by strong emotions or conflicts.
