Virus can spread to infect secondary sites either through the bloodstream or through neurons.
What is hematogenous and neurotropic spread?
In hematogenous spread,
- Virus spreads to other organs through the bloodstream.
- Can be by direct injection into the blood or due to the virions entering the interstitial fluid that bathes our cells. Eg: HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus)
In neurotropic spread,
- Virus spread throughout the body using neurons.
- Virus 1st infects neurons of PNS (Peripheral Nervous System) from where they spread to the CNS (Central Nervous System) which may ultimately lead to death. Eg: Rabies virus
