In the story, the message that is being sent is that the family would have to revenge against anyone that tries to harm them.

This is a story about a man Montressor. Montressor had gone to take revenge against another man that had insulted him in the story.

The symbolism here is that the family is going to revenge against anyone that would betray them, injure them or bering them to harm.
