All amino acids have an amine group -[tex]NH_2[/tex] and a carboxylic group -[tex]COOH[/tex].
The carboxylic group ionizes such that:
[tex]COOH -- > COO^- + H^+[/tex]
The presence of the amine group enables amino acids to also act as a base.
