What is companionate grandparent?
The kind of grandparent that cares deeply and unconditionally for his or her grandkids but does not step in to provide for them on a daily basis.
Cherlin and Furstenberg (1986) describe three styles of grandparents:
- Remote: Grandparents only see their grandchildren 30% of the time. They frequently have a distanced relationship with the grandchildren while typically living far from them. Usually, contact is made on important days like holidays or birthdays.
- Companionate: Of the grandparents surveyed, 55% were categorised as such. While they interact with the grandchildren, the grandparents don't have much power or control over them. They would rather be with them and not meddle in their parenting.
- Involved: Grandparents were categorized as "involved" in 15% of cases. In their grandchild's life, these grandparents are quite involved. The grandchildren might even reside with them. One who regularly interacts with and is in charge of the grandchild is the involved grandparent.
Therefore, according to numerous studies, grandmothers are more involved with their grand-kids than grandfathers are, just as women are more frequently the more involved parent to their children.
