Amy buys 3 pencils and 1 ruler and pays 67 cents. Ben buys 2 pencils and 3 rulers and pays 96 cents. Find the cost of 1 pencil and the cost of 1 ruler. Show all your working.

so,

3x + y = 67 ...(1)

2x + 3y = 96 ...(2)

From (1) we get,

y = 67 - 3x

put in equation 2 we get,

2x + 3(67 - 3x) = 96

2x + 201 - 9x = 96

-7x = 96 - 201

-7x = -105

7x = 105

x = 105/7

x = 15

NOW,

3x + y = 67

3(15) + y = 67

y = 67 - 45 = 22

1 pencil costs 15 cents and 1 ruler costs 22 cents
