The Rally took place in the Ralph Abernathy First Baptist Church, King had blamed the violence on the Governor Patterson.
This was after several places were arrested because of the freedom rides. They were accused of disobeying segregation laws. They were arrested and later left in a situation where they were attacked by a violent mob.
This led King to have the rally where he called on federal intervention in the situation.
The mob forced the state of Alabama to send the national guards to secure the people.
